teach me how to tweet

I am not sure if most of you have noticed, but I am not up to date on this twenty-first century social media. Yes, that's right, up until YESTERDAY, I did not have a Twitter account. A few months ago, I did not see the need for it, but now that this blogging adventure is becoming a bigger, I realize that Twitter will help me learn more about you guys, while also being an efficient way to communicate when new things are happening on this baby.
Here is my page:
Tweet me!
account name: amyj_palmer
(not too exciting yet, I know. It's called a work on progress)

To get to the real point though,
I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO USE IT!

So I am calling on all you little birds to teach me how to tweet.
Retweeting, favorites, #hashtags, and @ <--- those things look like a different language to me. Clearly, I need your help. I want Twitter to become my new best friend. Can you make that happen?

Let me know your tips and tricks and just plain "Twitter for Dummies" low-down. Anything, I mean anything at all would help.
Thanks so much lovelies and just think, we're one day closer to Friday!

Okay, here are some tips/explanations for ya: retweeting is just showing some love for other people that you follow on twitter by sharing their tweet with your followers.

Favorites don't do much except help you bookmark tweets that you enjoyed.

Hashtags are a great tool to get new followers. If you click on a hashtag, you will be directed to a page showing the most recent tweets that also included that hashtag. Lots of people look at these after they tweet something just to see what the scuttlebutt is on that particular topic and if they like what you have to say, they will most likely view your page and possibly follow you.

The @ is used to tag a particular person in your tweet. For example, if you wanted to tag me in a tweet then you would start the tweet with @brittosim and then write whatever is on your mind in 140 characters or less.

Hope this helped a little bit! Welcome to Twitter! :)

Sierra seemed to cover most things, but here are a few more things I like pointing out about twitter:

I love using twitter to follow and retweet celebrities, since it's a really cool way to keep up with what they're doing! (Neil Patrick Harris - @Actually NPH - posts so many food pictures!)

Using hashtags that are "failed" is something I do a lot. Hashtags that are actually useful are things like #BackBayBlackout (they hashtag used to communicate about things happening in the Boston area when it was blacked out for a day or so. Failed hashtags are things that you're fairly certain no one else will hashtag, yet you write it out to be humorous. For example, this morning I woke up and my friend Lindsay tweeted something sweet about me. I mentioned her (using @) and then hashtagged #thisiswhysheismybestfriend - I doubt anyone else will use that hashtag, but it still looks cool to use it.

I hope that wasn't too wordy of an explanation! If you want more examples, you can check out my twitter! (@zmanator)

Best of luck with tweeting!

I follow you!!

Tip: If you go to the top and click on the word "connect" you can see who is following you and who has tweeted you you (also known as @ replied)

It took me a while to hop on the Twitter wagon as well.

Sierra summed everything up nicely, and you will get the hang of it the more you interact on there.
