My parents and grandparents surprised me with such an exciting gift for Christmas this year! Instead of getting me a whole bunch of little things that I don't really need they are all pulling together to get me a "I think I am a professional photographer" camera. Of course, I am not. However, I would like to be able to take pretty pictures like
this lady takes or some sweet family shots like
this family does. The only problem (okay a major one) is I am not very educated in the camera world. And I KNOW some of you out there must have more knowledge than me. Because judging by your camera skills, you know what you're talking about. So, Canon or Nikon? Do the numbers after the name matter? What lens is the best? What size camera card do you recommend?
Any and all information or advice would really help me out over here, because truthfully, when looking at the cameras and the reviews, it's really like reading another language. And my only language is english, people. Help me out you camera language literate friends!

I totally get you! This is exactly how I felt a few weeks ago when I got my first DSLR. But after I read the manual, it helped me a lot! and it made me more confident that I wasn't going to break it whenever I pushed a weird button. LOL I have the Canon Rebel (the first one) and if your used to using a little pocket camera, it's like dying and going to heaven. Seriously. Nikon however, is a better quality brand, but also more expensive (depends on how much your grandparents/parents are willing to spend). But either one you decide to get, will work wondefully! I'm not an expert at this....but I hope this helps a little bit.

we have the Canon Ti3, and the kit lens. i love it because it also records video, which we use all the time with Owen! but my MIL has the canon Si (which is like the "basic" canon dslr) and she loves it tons.
either of these i think would be amazing for you!
Yay for your DSLR!!! So fun. I just got one a couple of months ago and still have no idea what I'm doing, unfortunately. I got a Nikon D7000 and noticed on their site that they have a seminar every couple of months or so, so I signed up! It's a day long but I think it'll be worth it!
yeee congratulations on the camera! I would love one of these guys, but like you, I don't know much about it ...but very exciting!
I have a Canon and I love it!!!! Can't go wrong!

I have had a canon rebel for a couple of years and LOVE it. I tend to find canons easy than nikons, personally
